I never saw this problem for the first year or so that I had the computer. One of these days, I'll have to open the thing up and clean it out. I suspect the continuing build-up of dust in the fans and vents causes higher temps on a regular basis which leads to this issue more frequently. My iMac has had this problem more frequently as the computer has aged. If you regularly push your computer like this so that the internal temps often run hot, you definitely need SMC fan control to run the fan speeds up. If you are making heavy use of your iMac (like using Photoshop or doing video editing), you'll start to see this problem crop up. Under normal use in a cool-ish room, the problem will not usually show up. The persistence isn't damaging the screen, but it is indicative of a design flaw due to the obsessiveness with Apple over keeping the computer as quiet as possible. You can pretty much remove the problem in the future by using SMC fan control and running the fan speeds up to around 2000 RPM or so. The image persistence can be fixed by simply changing the desktop background to pure white and leaving it sit like that for several hours. This problem is endemic to the 24" iMac and is caused by excessive heating behind the display. An LCD screen will not show image persistence after a mere hour or two with a static image. I was surprised by that.Image persistence is user caused, so I doubt that the Apple warranty covers it. To remove image persistence one can use apps such as LCD Scrub to 'unstick' the pixels. The genius at the A-store said this was the first one he's seen. One can set the timer that activates the Screen Saver after so many minutes of inactivity on the Mac or set hot corners to activate the Screen Saver or to put the display to sleep by parking the cursor in the appropriate hot corner. I'm curious to hear other stories and hopefully fixes. Needless to say, that's not an option but a badly burned screen is not one either, especially for editing photos. I brought the iMac into the store today and I was quoted over $900 to have the screen and logic board replaced. I'm running jscreenfix tonight to see if anything helps. There are images of windows and the DVD from the iDVD menu on the screen. Looks like magnetized particles on the screen that just won't clear. With the right color (mostly blue tints) as my desktop background, I'd describe the effect as an etch-a-sketch that's not fully erased. I didn't think the menu was on screen all that long but after a little investigating, it was clear this was where it came from. It looks like a menu has burned in from iDVD as I've been doing a lot of mini-DV direct to CD burning. I've had no problem with the screen until recently when I noticed screen burn while editing photos. I also have a 24" 2.4 iMac purchased in August of 2007 (when they first came out). It is easy enough to just keep using the screen-savers or whatever to get rid of them, but obviously they will come back, and my concern is, is this just going to keep getting WORSE? Am i eventually going to end up having to completely change my usage habits (like having to turn my display off every hour or two, or running LCD Scrub every night) to get around this problem? Is this the intended behaviour of these displays? Running LCD Scrub for a few hours makes the original shadows go away, but they just come back somewhere else later. But all of a sudden i am seeing this persistence thing where for example keeping my browser window in one place for a few hours gives me vertical bars where the window edge used to be. Screen Cleaner Spray (16oz) Best Large Kit for LCD LED Matte TVs, Smartphones, iPads, Laptops, Touchscreens, Computer Monitors, Other Electronic Devices Microfiber Cloth and 2 Sprayers Included. I have a full-time job, i go on frequent trips away from home, and nobody else uses the machine but me, so it's not like it's being used all day and all night either.Ĩ months i've been leaving Firefox and Adium windows up, sometimes for hours, doing whatever, never had a single shadow. I have always kept the screen on the absolute lowest brightness, i have my screen-saver set to kick in after 20-ish minutes and the display set to turn off after about 30. I have changed nothing about my iMac usage since i bought it. My concern is, this didn't start happening until JUST this week. I have read all about this subject and i know that it's usually not permanent, and i know how to get rid of it with the white images or the screen-savers or whatever. Just this week though i am noticing image persistence on the screen. I have had no hardware issues with it at all until now. I have had my 24" Intel iMac since like May of this past year.
